Health & Essentials
Doctors & Hospitals – We sincerely hope that you will not have to visit a doctor during your holiday but should this be necessary doctors are on call 24 hours. Local hospitals provide excellent medical care and most have English speaking staff. In any emergency, please call New Generation Property Services on 00 90 530 880 51 23 — manned 24 hours, 7 days per week from 1st May to 31st October.
Chemist – Open each day between 9am to late. Most items can be bought over the counter and many prescription-only items in the UK are available without prescription — please ask at the chemist. The majority of medications are the same as the UK and all chemists have English speaking staff. Baby milk & food is limited in Turkey and can be expensive; bigger supermarkets carry the largest range.
Post Office (PTT) – Open Monday to Saturday between 9am – 5pm. Phone cards are readily available from local shops. To call the UK, dial 0044 and omit the first zero of the area code. Mobile roaming can be expensive — check tariffs with your network supplier.
Banks & Cash Machines – Credit & charge cards are accepted by many hotels, shops & restaurants but you should check first.
Supermarkets & Smaller Markets – Smaller markets sell basic items such as bread, milk & water but may be more expensive. Large supermarkets in Hisarönü, Ovacık, Fethiye & Çalış include Azda, Migros, Bim, Şok & Kipa (part of Tesco Supermarkets), with fresh & frozen meat.
Bars – There are a vast array of bars in the area — no doubt you will find your own special bar!
Sunday Opening – In Hisarönü & Ovacık most shops are open every day including Sundays. In Fethiye town many local shops are closed but cafes & gift shops will be open, generally from 9am until very late in the evening.
Transport & Getting Around.
From dolmuş minibuses to taxis and car hire, getting around the Fethiye region is straightforward once you know the basics. The following notes cover everyday travel, parking and driving in the area.
Travel, Parking & Driving
Local Transport – The dolmuş (pronounced dolmush) minibus is the cheapest & easiest way to travel. White vehicles display destinations in the front window. Prices are shown inside — pay when you board or alight. Buses stop anywhere — just put your hand out.
Taxis – More expensive than buses but cheap by UK standards. All taxis are yellow. Agree the fare before getting in; drivers may have limited English but generally understand where you want to go.
Petrol Station – Petrol & diesel are expensive in Turkey. Ovacık/Hisarönü has one station at the far end of Ovacık on the main road to Fethiye. Fethiye has several, many open 24 hours.
Renting a Car – An International Driving Permit (IDP) is theoretically required, though rentals are often possible with a standard valid licence — take both photo card & paper copy. Foreign registered cars may only stay in Turkey for a maximum of 6 months. Contact NGPS on 00 90 530 880 5123 for daily & weekly hire rates.
Parking – Parking is fairly easy with car parks and side-road spaces. Look for the man in an orange jacket for fees. Unpaid tickets may be linked to your car registration and passport. Hisarönü is pedestrian only from 7pm until dawn.
Driving & Tips – Drive on the right; seat belts are required for all passengers. Drink driving is illegal. Carry your licence and passport at all times. In an accident, never admit liability — co-operate with police and call us. Speed limits: typically 50km in built-up areas, 120km on motorways. Scooters & motorcycles must wear crash helmets.
